The person behind the champion

A story to start with

Once a powerful Icathian mage, Zilean became obsessed with the passage of time after witnessing his homeland's destruction by the Void. Unable to spare even a minute to grieve the catastrophic loss, he called upon ancient temporal magic to divine all possible outcomes. Having become functionally immortal, Zilean now drifts through the past, present, and future, bending and warping the flow of time around him, always searching for that elusive moment that will turn back the clock and undo Icathia's destruction.

Short biography by Riot Games · Data Dragon 16.20.1

What shapes their story?

The study of time grows from a homeland he could not save through ordinary means. Zilean's search keeps possibility alive without establishing that every contemplated future is an event that happened, making uncertainty part of both the hope and the burden.

Icathia's destruction breaks an ordinary life
Zilean's life was broken by Icathia's destruction. Temporal magic offered a way to keep searching for an alternative when ordinary grief would require accepting that the homeland was lost.

Time offers alternatives to an ending
Moving among possible moments makes survival different from an ordinary long life. The more outcomes he can examine, the harder it becomes to stop looking for the one that might undo the catastrophe.

Possibility keeps the catastrophe unfinished
Zilean's command of time lets him examine alternatives rather than accept one irreversible account of Icathia's fall. That ability also prolongs the responsibility of searching. Jax carries the same homeland's memory differently, preparing fighters for what comes next instead of trying to recover what was lost.

Known places and connections

Origins, journeys and documented events. A connection here does not mean this champion lives there now.

Regional connection

Shurima

Icathia's destruction lies behind Zilean's study of time. His regional association is a lost homeland's history, not a declaration of loyalty to a restored empire.

More about the region

The remains of a vast empire lie among desert settlements and ancient ruins. The return of Ascended powers brings old betrayals into the lives of mercenaries, wanderers and people fighting for a future of their own.

Ruined homeland

Icathia

Icathia's rebellion against Shurima unleashed the Void and destroyed the land its people hoped to free. Jax and Zilean preserve very different responses to that loss; other champions connect to the breach, the war or its aftermath.

Why this place mattersIcathia's fall drives his efforts to find a future beyond the catastrophe through the study of time.

What makes this place matter?

The empire's fall did not end life in Shurima. Settlements, trade and local cultures continued among its ruins. Azir's return reopens old imperial ambitions, while Sivir and Taliyah offer perspectives shaped by the people living in the desert today.

Where the stories come from

VRC.LOL writes the introductions, reading notes and connections using linked Riot Universe biographies and regional guides. Short champion summaries use Data Dragon version 16.20.1. Longer histories link to the official story used; some champions currently have a shorter official overview.

What the pictures show

Artwork belongs to Riot Games. Scenery comes from Riot's Runeterra world map; champion art depicts the character. A regional illustration sets the scene when a landmark has no dedicated image. It does not show a confirmed event at that exact place.
