Health, mana, gold and wave timing

Recall because the map gives you a window, not because one bar looks low.

Read four things together: whether you can survive, whether your champion can still perform its next job, what the wave will do, and what your gold buys.

Short answer

Stay only while staying has a safe purpose.

Low health or mana is a warning, not a universal percentage rule. If one likely trade, gank, dive or objective fight exceeds what you can safely answer, create the best available reset instead of donating a takedown.

  1. 1Safe to finishCrash, then Recall
  2. 2Unsafe to remainLeave now and accept lost farm
  3. 3No useful purchaseStay only if the next job is safe

Before pressing B

Four checks make one Recall decision

Do not let a single green, blue or gold bar decide the whole lane.

1Survival

What can reach me?

Compare your current health with enemy burst, range, crowd control, Ignite, a missing Jungler and the route to safety.

Low health matters most when the opponent can actually convert it.
2Mana or resource

Can I perform the next job?

Count the abilities needed to clear, escape, protect an ally or contest. A nearly empty bar can still be enough for one safe wave; a fuller bar can still be useless if the vital spell is unavailable.

Think in actions, not percentages.
3Wave

What happens while I am gone?

A clean crash makes the opposing turret absorb your minions. A wave moving toward you may be worth leaving alone. A bad half-push can feed the opponent a safe freeze.

Know whether the wave is leaving, meeting or returning.
4Purchase and map

What does the reset unlock?

Recall for a completed component, wards, objective timing, a shared team reset or because staying is unsafe. Waiting for perfect gold is not worth dying.

A smaller safe purchase beats unspent gold on a grey screen.

What the green bar does not tell you

Health has eight connected parts

Two champions can show the same current health and still have very different chances of surviving the next hit.

Maximum healthThe full capacity of the green bar Current healthWhat remains right now ShieldTemporary protection outside the health pool
Right now

Current health

The amount left before your champion dies. Recall safety starts here, then adds incoming damage, shields, healing and escape access.

Capacity

Maximum health

The full size of the bar. Health items and some champion effects can increase it, but a larger empty bar is still empty.

Added capacity

Bonus health

Maximum health gained from sources beyond the champion's base health. Some abilities and items scale specifically from bonus or maximum health.

Passive recovery

Health regeneration

Restores health over time. It helps during quiet gaps, but it cannot protect you from damage that arrives faster than the recovery.

Active recovery

Healing and lifesteal

Healing restores missing health. Lifesteal and similar effects require a valid source of damage or trigger; crowd control and lost target access can prevent that recovery.

Temporary buffer

Shields

A shield absorbs eligible damage before health and normally expires. It does not refill the green bar or permanently increase maximum health.

Damage reduction

Armour and magic resistance

Resistances help the same health pool absorb more of the matching damage type. Maximum health alone is not a complete defence.

Champion-specific

Health costs and grey health

Some champions spend health or show recoverable health differently. Read that champion's ability tooltips instead of treating every unusual bar as mana.

Heartsteel item icon

Item example · Patch 16.16.1

Heartsteel increases maximum health. It is not health steal.

Heartsteel is a tank item built around repeated, close-range champion contact. Its charged basic attack deals bonus physical damage and converts part of that damage into permanent maximum health.

HeartsteelHealth-stacking tank item
1Prepare

Stay near an enemy champion

The item must prepare its effect on that target. A visible charged target is an opportunity, not an order to walk into danger.

2Trigger

Land the basic attack

The charged attack adds bonus physical damage. You still need safe attack range and a route out after committing.

3Stack

Gain permanent maximum health

Part of the proc's damage becomes maximum health. Repeating safe procs across a match grows capacity rather than directly refilling all missing health.

What it helps

Longer front-line patterns

  • Champions whose kit already benefits from a large health pool.
  • Drafts where safe repeated contact is realistic.
  • Fights where enough time exists to reach and attack several targets.
What it does not replace

Healing, resistances or judgement

  • It is not lifesteal and does not turn every attack into a large heal.
  • It does not supply armour or magic resistance for every threat.
  • It does not justify staying on unsafe current health for one stack.
Recall rule

Do not die for the sound

If collecting the charged attack exposes you to lethal damage, crowd control or several missing enemies, let that opportunity go. A living champion can collect later stacks; a death loses time, gold and map pressure.

If you mean “which item takes health for me?”

Lifesteal is the closest match, but every health effect works differently.

An item can restore health, increase the size of the bar, add a shield, amplify another heal, or reduce incoming damage. Those are not interchangeable.

Plain answerBloodthirster and Blade of The Ruined King provide lifesteal.

You heal from eligible basic-attack damage. They do not literally remove a fixed piece of the enemy health bar and hand that exact amount to you.

Bloodthirster item icon Lifesteal

Bloodthirster

Basic-attack damage can restore health through lifesteal. Excess lifesteal healing can become a shield.

No target access means no lifesteal recovery.
Blade of The Ruined King item icon Lifesteal + current-health damage

Blade of The Ruined King

Attacks gain lifesteal and deal bonus damage based on the enemy's current health.

The bonus damage is not the amount healed; lifesteal follows its own value.
Riftmaker item icon Conditional omnivamp

Riftmaker

After its combat effect reaches full strength, damage can provide omnivamp.

It is not immediate healing on the first spell.
Unending Despair item icon Triggered healing

Unending Despair

During champion combat, its repeating nearby damage can heal from damage dealt.

Range and surviving long enough for the trigger both matter.
Warmog's Armor item icon Out-of-combat regeneration

Warmog's Armor

Provides a very large health pool and can restore health after leaving combat when its condition is met.

It is not an emergency heal while enemies keep damaging you.
Spirit Visage item icon Healing and shield amplifier

Spirit Visage

Increases healing and shields applied to you while adding health and magic resistance.

It improves a healing or shield source; it does not create one by itself.
Sterak's Gage item icon Low-health shield

Sterak's Gage

A damaging hit that pushes health low can trigger a temporary decaying shield.

A shield buys time but does not refill missing health.
Jak'Sho, The Protean item icon Health + resistances

Jak'Sho, The Protean

Adds health, armour and magic resistance, then strengthens bonus resistances after time in champion combat.

It makes health harder to remove; it does not heal the bar.

Choose the wave result

Push first only when you can finish safely

The wave is a clock. Every extra hit delays your Recall and gives opponents another chance to reach you.

1Best clean window

Fast push and crash

Clear the remaining enemy minions so your wave reaches the opposing turret, then move out of vision and Recall.

Choose this when the lane is safe enough to finish.
2Wave coming to you

Leave it to return

When the opposing wave will naturally move toward your side, avoid unnecessary attacks that reverse it. Recall and collect the return if timing permits.

Ask whether your turret or teammate will remove it first.
3No safe wave fix

Recall immediately

If clearing exposes you to a kill, gank or cancelled channel, retreat farther and accept the farm loss. Dying usually loses the wave as well.

Safety overrides the tidy wave.

The channel itself

Eight seconds only works when nobody can interrupt it.

A standard Recall channel lasts eight seconds. Baron grants an empowered four-second Recall. Moving, issuing an incompatible action or taking hostile damage can stop the channel, so distance, vision and damage-over-time effects still matter.

Watch the live channel bar.Current client behaviour and tooltips remain authoritative if Riot changes a timing or special interaction.
  1. 1Break contactMove beyond immediate reach

Do not begin beside an opponent who can walk into range before the channel ends.

  2. 2Check visionUse a safe, less predictable place

A brush is not automatically safe when warded, and walking deep into fog can be worse than recalling farther back.

  3. 3Begin RecallStop issuing commands

Let the channel finish. Delayed damage can cancel it after the opponent has already left.

  4. 4Shop with purposeBuy, then leave base promptly

Know the intended component before recalling so the window is not spent reading the whole shop.

Same button, different responsibility

Recall without abandoning your role

Your own resources matter, but so do the wave, nearby allies and the next objective.

Top

Protect the long return lane

Crash when safe, respect Teleport availability and avoid leaving a slow enemy wave that can be held far from your turret.

Jungle

Reset around camps and objectives

Spend before a planned contest when possible. Do not force one more camp if low resources make an invade or nearby fight impossible to answer.

Mid

Clear without exposing both rivers

A central crash can create a short reset, but missing enemies can reach Mid quickly. Preserve the spell needed to escape after clearing.

Bot

Coordinate the duo reset

Recall with Support when practical so neither partner returns alone into two opponents. Protect high-value farm, but do not die for the final minion.

Support

Do not strand Bot for a ward refill

Help complete the intended push, check whether Bot can collect safely, then reset for wards and the next movement window.

Not every champion uses mana

Read the resource your champion actually has

The champion page and live ability tooltips explain the exact costs and regeneration.

Mana

Persistent pool spent by abilities and restored over time, through effects or at the fountain. Plan enough for the next required actions.

Energy

Smaller, fast-restoring pool. A brief pause may restore access, but spending every ability together can still leave no immediate answer.

Special resource

Fury, Heat, Grit and champion-specific bars follow their own rules. More is not always better; read what the abilities consume or unlock.

No ability resource

Manaless does not mean limitless. Health costs, cooldowns, positioning and the wave can still force a Recall.

Summoner's RiftNormal Recall-and-shop rhythm

Swiftplay, Draft and Ranked alter pacing and economy, but all still require a safe channel and a useful return plan.

ARAMDifferent shop and return rules

Howling Abyss does not use the normal lane Recall loop. Follow the mode's live shop rules instead of copying this Summoner's Rift sequence.

Quick answers

Recall questions without a fixed percentage

Open the answer that matches the decision in front of you.

At what health percentage should I Recall?

There is no safe universal percentage. Compare current health with the damage and control that can reach you, including a missing Jungler, then consider the wave and route out.

Does low mana always mean go back?

No. Count the abilities needed for the next safe job and consider regeneration. Recall when the missing resource prevents that job or makes staying too dangerous.

Does Heartsteel heal me or steal health?

No. Heartsteel's charged champion attack can add permanent maximum health. That is different from healing missing health, lifesteal, a temporary shield or stealing the opponent's health bar.

Does more maximum health replace armour or magic resistance?

No. Health increases the amount of damage the bar can hold. Armour and magic resistance help that pool withstand their matching damage types, while percentage-health effects can specifically pressure large pools.

Should I always push before recalling?

No. Crash first when you can finish safely. Leave immediately when attempting to clear gives an opponent enough time or reach to defeat you or cancel the Recall.

Is recalling inside a brush safe?

Only when the route and vision are safe. A warded brush hides nothing, and an opponent may check a common Recall location even without vision.
