Riot Games · World artwork02Industry reshapes daily life
Chemical enterprise and experimentation offer power while exposing inhabitants to danger. The Dredge gives Urgot's transformation a particularly brutal setting within that wider industrial world.
Riot Games · World artwork03Communities make their own future
Neighbourhood protection and ingenuity provide another account of Zaun. Ekko and Zeri's commitments show why the city's people are more than victims of its hazards.

More regional history and context
A past that shapes the present
History of the region
The twin cities share a history, but prosperity has never been distributed evenly between them. Zaun's inhabitants built communities and ingenious solutions amid industrial hazards. Chem-baron influence, experiments and neighbourhood solidarity now pull the undercity toward very different futures.
The story beneath the scenery
What is at stake?
Zaun is a lived-in home as well as an industrial undercity. Its different levels separate workshops, markets and dangerous depths. Ekko and Zeri's community ties offer a different view from the chem-barons and experiments that dominate many outsiders' impressions.

Zaun undercity
Connected levels of workshops, industry and densely inhabited streets form Piltover's counterpart. Champion stories show different lives here, from community protection to dangerous chemical experiments.

Sump
Zaun's deepest inhabited level is associated with its harshest industrial conditions. Riot's gallery contrasts life here with the markets and institutions higher in the city.

Promenade
The upper reaches of Zaun include markets and institutions. The Promenade helps explain why the undercity has distinct neighbourhoods and social worlds rather than one uniform landscape.

Entresol
A middle level within Zaun's vertical city. Workshops, trade and movement between levels make it part of the city's everyday life, between the Promenade and the Sump.

The prison mine beneath Zaun is where the betrayed Noxian executioner Urgot was forced to survive. Its suffering reshaped his idea of strength before he brought that brutal doctrine into the city's underworld.

Champions connected to this region
These are regional story connections, including origins and affiliations. They do not confirm where a character is now.
BlitzcrankTheir place in the wider story
Blitzcrank began as a machine intended to handle Zaun's dangerous waste. Their original work placed them directly among the hazards that wealthy parts of the twin cities could afford to overlook.
Dr. MundoTheir place in the wider story
Before calling himself a doctor, Mundo was an enforcer who became a patient in a Zaunite asylum. The institution's abuse transformed an already unusual man into something far more dangerous.
EkkoTheir place in the wider story
Ekko's ingenuity grows from life in Zaun. His Z-Drive lets him revisit possibilities, turning an inventive young person's refusal to accept a bad outcome into a distinctive kind of power.
JannaTheir place in the wider story
Janna is a wind spirit whose identity is bound to people's need for protection. Traditions connect her with sailors' prayers, while Zaun's dispossessed have come to know her as their own source of hope.
JinxTheir place in the wider story
Jinx's story grows from Zaun and the painful consequences of her past. Improvised weapons and explosive spectacle make that history visible across the divide between the undercity and Piltover.
Renata GlascTheir place in the wider story
Renata Glasc's childhood losses left her with her family's alchemical work and a name to rebuild. She turned that inheritance into the foundations of a vast Zaunite business.
SingedTheir place in the wider story
Singed treats alchemy as a pursuit whose limits are set by curiosity rather than ordinary ethics. The people affected by an experiment can become less important to him than the knowledge it produces.
TwitchTheir place in the wider story
Twitch comes from Zaun's filthiest spaces and takes pride in things the city above would discard. His fascination with refuse gives him a perspective almost the reverse of Piltover's polished self-image.
UrgotTheir place in the wider story
Urgot once enforced Noxian power as an executioner. Betrayal reduced him from an instrument of authority to a prisoner in the Dredge beneath Zaun.

The DredgeSurviving this prison mine transformed the betrayed Noxian executioner's understanding of strength.
ViktorTheir place in the wider story
Viktor's search for progress begins with a desire to overcome human suffering. Invention and arcane discovery offer the possibility of changing conditions that ordinary institutions have failed to address.
WarwickTheir place in the wider story
Warwick's monstrous body was made through agonising Zaunite experiments. Pumps, chambers and alchemy push rage through a life whose earlier identity survives only in troubled fragments.
ZacTheir place in the wider story
Zac began as an unexpected result of Zaun's chemical waste, gathering in a cavern beneath the Sump. Something that might have been only another industrial hazard developed awareness and a capacity to care.
ZeriTheir place in the wider story
Zeri grew up in Zaun with a family and neighbourhood worth defending. Her electric magic is inseparable from emotion, making a desire to help both a source of strength and something she must learn to control.
ZiggsTheir place in the wider story
Ziggs found ordinary work as an inventor's assistant in Piltover too predictable. His fascination with explosions wanted an environment less interested in treating every experiment as a controlled routine.
ViTheir place in the wider story
Vi's childhood in Zaun taught her to survive through quick judgement and direct force. An unjust imprisonment adds another reason for her distrust of the authority she later comes to work beside.
OriannaTheir place in the wider story
Orianna's curiosity first belonged to a human girl. Exposure to danger in Zaun set off an illness that forced her body to be replaced through painstaking mechanical work.
SeraphineTheir place in the wider story
Seraphine grew up in Piltover within a Zaunite family, hearing the world through an unusual awareness of other souls. What others experienced as ordinary noise could overwhelm her.

Where the stories come from
VRC.LOL writes the introductions, reading notes and connections using linked Riot Universe biographies and regional guides. Short champion summaries use Data Dragon version 16.20.1. Longer histories link to the official story used; some champions currently have a shorter official overview.
What the pictures show
Artwork belongs to Riot Games. Scenery comes from Riot's Runeterra world map; champion art depicts the character. A regional illustration sets the scene when a landmark has no dedicated image. It does not show a confirmed event at that exact place.
