Your first League matches

Pick one role, learn one champion and give yourself one small job at a time. You do not need to memorise the whole roster before pressing Play.

What sounds fun first?

There is no perfect first champion. Choose the job that leaves you enough attention to notice the map, minions and other players.

Garen champion artworkTop

Your starting point

I want room to learn alone

Garen

Durable, clear abilities and no mana bar. He leaves room to practise last-hitting, short trades and returning to safety.

First job
Farm first. Trade when your abilities are ready, then step back and recover.
Watch out
Do not follow an opponent deep into their side of the map just because they are low.

One approachable first look per role

Five champions with readable jobs

These are learning suggestions, not a tier list or win prediction. Choose one and replay it long enough for the buttons to become familiar.

1TopGaren

Durable, clear abilities and no mana bar. He leaves room to practise last-hitting, short trades and returning to safety.

First focus
Farm first. Trade when your abilities are ready, then step back and recover.
Watch out
Do not follow an opponent deep into their side of the map just because they are low.
Learn next
Learn when to leave lane for a turret, objective or team fight.
Amumu champion artwork
2JungleAmumu

A readable clear, a long-range engage and an ultimate that gives every team fight an obvious purpose.

First focus
Clear camps, watch nearby lanes and enter fights with an ally close enough to follow.
Watch out
Jungle asks you to read more of the map. Co-op vs AI or Practice Tool is the gentlest first stop.
Learn next
Use the pathing guide before trying faster or mechanically demanding junglers.
Annie champion artwork
3MidAnnie

Short, understandable spells and a visible stun counter make ability timing easier to read.

First focus
Last-hit safely, keep track of your stun and do not chase beyond the river without vision.
Watch out
Mid can be approached from both sides, so make a quick minimap glance part of every wave.
Learn next
Practise clearing a wave before moving to help another lane.
Miss Fortune champion artwork
4BotMiss Fortune

Straightforward attacks, useful movement speed and a team-fight ultimate make the Bot carry job easy to recognise.

First focus
Stand behind your frontline, collect minions and attack the safest reachable enemy.
Watch out
You are powerful but fragile. Safe damage is better than walking through danger for one target.
Learn next
Learn to move between attacks and keep the opposing Support in view.
Yuumi champion artwork
5SupportYuumi

Attaching to an ally reduces early movement pressure and lets a brand-new player watch lanes, fights and the minimap.

First focus
Stay active: use abilities deliberately, track mana, ward with your ally and learn when it is safe to detach.
Watch out
Attachment is not invulnerability. Your ally can still carry you into danger, and warding still requires care.
Learn next
Move to Leona or another independent Support to practise walking, spacing, roaming and placing vision safely.

More than one way to learn each role

Choose a play style, not a tier-list winner

Each lane has several approachable starting points. Pick the job that sounds easiest to remember, then repeat that champion before expanding.

Your first session

A calm route from tutorial to real players

Move forward when the previous step feels familiar. Repeating a step is progress, not failure.

Step 1Learn the controls

Tutorial

Move, attack, cast each ability and open the shop without worrying about winning.

Leave when: the controls feel familiar
Step 2Learn one job

Co-op vs AI

Take your chosen champion into the same role and practise returning to lane after shopping.

Leave when: you can find your lane and items
Step 3Meet real players

Swiftplay

Keep the plan small: play your role, collect safe experience and join nearby teammates.

Leave when: the pace no longer feels overwhelming
Step 4Learn full selection

Normal Draft

Use assigned roles, bans and champion select without adding Ranked pressure.

Ranked can wait; there is no deadline

ARAM is fine for learning fights and abilities, but it does not teach normal lanes, jungle routes or recalling. Treat it as a different lesson rather than the required next step.

A plan you can remember

Your first ten minutes

Do these in order. Kills are optional; participation and learning are the goal.

  1. 1
    Before leaving base

    Buy the recommended opening

Use the Recommended shop tab. Check the minimap and walk to the lane or jungle position assigned by the client.

  2. 2
    First waves or camps

    Collect safe gold and experience

Stay near living minions when they die. If your role farms, try to land the final hit; Support should follow its role item and lane-partner plan.

  3. 3
    Every few seconds

    Glance at the minimap

Check whether an opponent has disappeared and whether an ally is close enough to help. One brief glance is enough.

  4. 4
    When low or carrying gold

    Return safely and shop

Move away from enemies before recalling. Buy an affordable part from the recommended path, then return to your job.

  5. 5
    When allies group nearby

    Join reachable fights

Arrive with the team rather than walking first into an unseen area. Attack a safe reachable target and preserve your escape.

Everyone has difficult matches

What to do after dying

Use the grey screen to breathe and reset the plan. A death is information, not an instruction to fight the same way again.

1

Check what hit you

Was it a turret, several opponents or an ability you did not recognise? You only need one answer.

2

Buy, then follow safety

Take an affordable recommended item part. Return through visible paths and move with an ally when possible.

3

Make the next goal smaller

Collect one safe wave, ward one entrance or help one nearby teammate. Do not chase the score back in a single fight.

When these basics feel normal

Beginner questions

Plain answers before you queue

Is Yuumi the best first League champion?

Yuumi can be a gentle first Support because attaching reduces movement pressure, but she does not teach every core skill. Use her to learn the interface and team fights, then practise an independent champion such as Leona to learn positioning, roaming and vision.

Which mode should a complete beginner play first?

Start with the tutorial and Co-op vs AI. Move to Swiftplay when controls and shopping feel comfortable, then try Normal Draft when you want bans, assigned roles and the full Summoner's Rift structure.

Should a beginner play Ranked?

Ranked Solo/Duo and Ranked Flex are locked until account level 30. Riot also currently requires at least 20 owned champions and 10 completed Swiftplay or Normal Draft games. Meeting those requirements makes Ranked available; it does not mean you need to rush into it. Normal games teach the same core map without ranked progression, so begin Ranked when you can recognise your role, buy a basic build and keep participating after a difficult lane.

What matters more than getting kills?

Staying alive, collecting nearby minion experience, earning last hits when your role needs them, watching the minimap and joining reachable objectives are dependable beginner goals.
