Five jobs, one map
Your lane tells you where to begin, not where you must stay forever.
Handle the next safe wave, communicate movement and use the role's income correctly. A roam is useful only when the lane can afford it.

Assigned position versus map movement
You may swap lanes, but the game still remembers your assignment
An agreed position trade is allowed. In Draft or Ranked, make that trade during champion select whenever possible so the correct role quest follows each player.
Walking into another lane is not an account punishment by itself. The practical penalties are in-game economy and quest penalties, plus the damage an unplanned swap can do to a teammate's lane.
Riot assigns the role quest from the position recorded in champion select. Use the position-swap flow before loading so both players receive the intended quest.
Top, Mid and Bot receive reduced minion gold and experience outside their assigned lane until level 3. Support also receives reduced early minion and support-item income outside Bot.
Lane minions, plates, turrets and passive progress favour the recorded lane. A later roam or wave assignment is normal, but it does not rewrite the quest.
Do not take another player's lane or income against their wishes, abandon your responsibility, or use a “swap” as cover for sabotage. Riot has the final say on player conduct.
This is normal play, not a lane swap. Mid can attempt the kill, help break a freeze or cover briefly. Check the Mid wave first so the move does not surrender more than it can gain.
Support can establish vision or create pressure while Bot can farm safely. World Atlas and early Support income still favour Bot, so this should be a timed roam rather than an unexplained abandonment.
Any role may temporarily defend a turret or catch an otherwise unclaimed wave. That does not permanently change the assigned role or its quest.
Starting responsibilities
What each role should protect
Champion kits can change the method. The resource responsibility remains the useful starting point.
Top
Collect solo experience, manage the long lane and track when the opposing Top can leave.
Do not abandon several waves to force a low-percentage roam.
Jungle
Clear camps efficiently, track the opposing Jungler and move where nearby lanes can support the play.
Do not force a river objective when both adjacent lanes are trapped under turret.
Mid
Control the short lane, clear before moving and keep both river entrances visible.
Do not disappear into fog while a full enemy wave is entering your turret.
Bot
Take most lane last-hits, preserve health and communicate whether the pair is pushing, holding or recalling.
Do not walk past the Support to collect one unsafe minion.
Support
Protect Bot access to the wave, control threat angles, use support charges correctly and establish vision with allies.
Do not take ordinary last-hits or roam merely to give Bot solo XP when the carry cannot farm safely.
Who normally takes what?
Keep the team's five income routes separate
These are normal starting responsibilities, not a reason to ignore farm that would otherwise disappear.

Bot and Support need one wave plan
Support helps shape the wave while avoiding the final hit unless a support charge or lost-minion exception applies.
The Support landing the last hit does not change the XP share. Their presence changes solo XP into shared XP.
Bot should give up an unreachable last-hit instead of walking through control or burst. Support should stand where the carry can approach the wave.
Support can move after a crash, safe recall, enemy reset or when Bot can farm safely. Communicate the departure and return route.

When lane phase ends, keep assigning waves
Leaving lane does not mean ignoring minions. It means matching safe collectors to the waves while the team contests space together.
Move the durable or mobile solo laner toward a side wave while the carry takes a safer central route when appropriate.
A handled wave forces an opponent to choose between farm and arriving first. Walking away from a bad wave gives that pressure away.
Support and Jungle should not enter the dark side alone. Establish a short safe line before extending it.
Assign waveclear, count missing enemies and link the lane state to Baron, dragon or the final structures.
Quick decisions
Before leaving your lane, ask four questions
- 1Where will the next wave meet?Know whether it is pushing toward safety or away from it.
- 2Who loses the minions?A move has a cost when nobody can collect the wave.
- 3Can the nearest roles move too?Lane priority determines who reaches river first.
- 4What happens if nothing is found?Plan the return path before starting the roam.
Quick answers
Lane and role questions
Short answers for decisions that commonly cause crossed wires.
What is the difference between a lane and a role?
A lane is a route on the map. A role describes your resource and team responsibility, such as Jungle camps or Support vision.
Can teammates swap their assigned lanes?
Yes, when both players agree. In an assigned-position queue, trade positions during champion select so the role quests are correct. An in-game swap remains possible, but early off-lane income and quest progress can be reduced.
Should Support leave Bot to give the carry solo XP?
Not for that reason alone. Roam when Bot can farm safely and a useful movement window exists, then communicate the return route.
When does lane phase end?
There is no fixed timer. The map opens as outer turrets fall, objectives approach and teams begin assigning safe waves across multiple roles.
Can an unusual champion still play a lane?
Yes, but the player still needs a credible plan for that role's income, safety and team responsibility. An unusual selection does not remove the lane job.
