An unusual champion, role or build is not automatic proof of griefing.
Official Riot sources, plainly explained
Are off-meta picks bannable?
Not merely because they are off-meta. Riot says intent and actual behaviour separate a genuine strategy from griefing.
Share the evidence, then keep playing the match.Participation, genuine effort and whether someone is deliberately reducing team success.
AFK play, intentional feeding, harassment and deliberately throwing are not protected.
Primary evidence
What Riot actually says
These are short excerpts from Riot-owned pages. Each card links to the full source and explains what the wording does, and does not, establish.
Off-meta is not automatically penalized
"We are not and will not be penalizing off-meta decisions."
What it establishes: the unusual decision itself is not the offence. Riot follows this by explaining that intent, including an attempt to sabotage teammates, is the important distinction.
Read the official patch notesRiot gives a Mid-lane example
"Bard mid isn't griefing ... but picking Yuumi mid because you don't care is."
What it establishes: champion and lane do not decide the case by themselves. Riot contrasts a genuine strategy with choosing something because the player does not care about team success.
Read the behavioral updateA report is not automatic proof
"Each report can't be treated as a clear signal."
What it establishes: Riot says some reports concern poor play that does not merit punishment and that some can be malicious. A submitted report is reviewed evidence, not a verdict.
Read Riot's report explanationTrying something new is not the same as sabotage
"We won't call you out just for making mistakes or trying new Champions."
What it establishes: Riot says its systems distinguish learning and mistakes from purposeful disruption. The same page defines griefing and sabotage through intentional harm to the team's success.
Read the current Community PactRiot's own comparison
Same lane. Different intent.
This is not a Bard recommendation or a Yuumi prohibition. Riot uses the two examples to show why a champion-role label cannot decide conduct by itself.
Bard Mid
Riot says this is not griefing by itself. The player has a plan and is genuinely trying to make the unusual strategy work.
Yuumi Mid
Riot's example becomes griefing because of the stated intent. The problem is not a universal ban on Yuumi Mid. It is selecting the pick because the player does not care about helping the team.
Mode context
The queue changes the setup, not the conduct boundary
Role selection, starting conditions and champion availability vary by mode. In every mode, an unusual choice is still separate from intentionally refusing to participate or trying to make the team lose.
Plan around the assigned role
Champion select exposes bans, picks and a clearer team composition. An unusual role should still have a real lane or jungle plan, appropriate summoner spells and an intention to perform the assigned job.
Open the draft plannerFlexibility is not immunity
Swiftplay encourages faster setup and can surface more experimental role choices. That makes the context different, but it does not turn AFK play, intentional feeding or deliberate sabotage into acceptable conduct.
Review Swiftplay differencesRead the rules of the match
ARAM does not use the normal five-role lane structure, while Custom games can use player-agreed formats. The normal role label may not fit, but genuine participation and the agreed match format still matter.
Compare game modesA concrete off-meta example
Yuumi Jungle is a pick, not a conduct verdict
Yuumi Jungle is not automatically griefing or bannable. It is an experimental, difficult choice with serious clear-speed and objective-control weaknesses. Whether the match becomes a conduct issue depends on intent and actual behaviour, not the champion portrait alone.
- 1Enter with a real planTake Smite and the intended jungle starter, then begin a route you genuinely expect to complete.
- 2Perform the roleClear camps, react to invades, look for reachable ganks and work with teammates around neutral objectives.
- 3Adapt when it strugglesAsk for help, change the route and keep contributing instead of pretending the champion's limitations do not exist.
- 4Keep trying to winA weak clear, lost objective or poor score is not proof of deliberate sabotage when the player continues participating.
- Choosing Yuumi Jungle because you are angry, autofilled or no longer care whether the team wins.
- Announcing an intention to troll, refusing to clear or contest anything, then using the champion choice as an excuse.
- Remaining Attached only to avoid clearing, moving around the map or performing any jungle responsibilities.
- Deliberately feeding, going AFK, selling items to throw, harassing teammates or otherwise sabotaging the game.
A workable AP experiment with a safety-first lane
A private, consented Companion sample contains 19 completed Yuumi Mid games: 10 wins and 9 losses. That is enough to show the pick has been played successfully, but far too personal and narrow to advertise as a general win rate.
- Farm from turret safety when direct lane control is unrealistic.
- Use Luden's Echo and Horizon Focus for long-range Q pressure.
- Move with allies after handling the wave, then scale into late AP.
Possible in one real match, not proven as a reliable Top pick
One encrypted local Companion record from patch 16.16 shows a 22:51 Yuumi Top win against Vex at 6/0/15. The same team led kills 45-17, took 11 towers and secured three Dragons, while Yuumi finished with 20 CS. Those details matter: the record proves the pick can function, not that Yuumi is generally strong in Top.
- Use turret safety and reachable Q pressure through the fragile lane.
- Build a deliberate AP route instead of relabelling the Support build.
- Keep low farm, weak wave control and missing side-lane pressure visible when reviewing the result.
A separate, clear-dependent experiment
The saved Jungle attempts do not show the same success. Nashor's Tooth can help camps, but it does not remove invade, movement or objective-control weaknesses. Mid results must not be used to validate Jungle.
- Take Smite and a Jungle companion.
- Solve camp clear before buying a normal burst core.
- Continue clearing and contesting instead of remaining Attached to avoid the role.
Terrain and turret example
Blitzcrank Top can use turret threat as a real plan
The pick and tactic are not an automatic conduct verdict. A Top-lane Blitzcrank can manage the wave near friendly terrain, threaten Rocket Grab into turret range and punish an opponent who walks into a reachable angle. That remains an experimental strategy with difficult farming, wave control and side-lane limits.
- 1Keep earning lane resourcesLast-hit, collect experience and manage the wave instead of surrendering every minion to the turret.
- 2Create a reachable hook angleHold the wave where an opponent must respect Rocket Grab into turret range, terrain or a waiting teammate.
- 3Trade without depending on one trickUse Power Fist, Overdrive and normal movement to contest the lane when no safe hook is available.
- 4Adapt when the opponent refuses the angleFarm, ward, coordinate a gank or move for an objective. Do not remain inactive solely because the opponent will not approach the turret.
- Standing under the turret for long periods while intentionally refusing reachable farm, experience and useful lane actions.
- Ignoring waves, objectives and teammates after it becomes clear that the opponent will not enter the hook angle.
- Announcing that the strategy is meant to punish teammates, force a loss or avoid an assigned responsibility.
- Deliberately feeding, going AFK, selling items to throw or harassing teammates after they question the pick.
Read the evidence carefully
What match data can and cannot establish
Statistics can help review whether a route exists and how a defined sample performed. Conduct is an individual decision about intent and behaviour, so data should provide context rather than a verdict.
A larger sample can show that other players have tried the champion-role combination. It does not prove that every attempt is well planned.
A positive or negative result can help evaluate strategy. Neither result approves conduct or demonstrates a player's intent.
A poor K/D/A, lost lane or missed objective may have many causes. Riot can consider fuller match and account context than a public score card shows.
Riot's published explanation says reports need context. Multiple teammates disagreeing with a pick does not by itself settle whether rules were broken.
The practical boundary
Unusual strategy versus deliberate disruption
The safest test is not "Is this popular?" It is "Is the player genuinely participating and trying to help the team succeed?"
Not automatically misconduct
- Choosing an unusual champion, role, rune page or build
- Following a genuine plan, even when teammates disagree
- Losing lane or having a poor score while still participating
- Adapting the strategy when it is not working
- Communicating normally, without provoking or harassing teammates
Can be disruptive behaviour
- Intentional feeding or repeatedly dying on purpose
- Going AFK or deliberately refusing to participate
- Announcing an intention to lose, throw or sabotage
- Following teammates to steal resources solely to harm them
- Selling items, wasting abilities or avoiding objectives to throw

Does your behaviour match a genuine strategy?
This is a personal check, not a Riot verdict or a guarantee against penalties.

Share once. Do not turn champion select into an argument.
A calm answer is stronger than a long defence. Continue playing normally, use mute or report tools for harassment where appropriate, and do not retaliate.
Clear answers
Off-meta and report questions
Can I be banned simply for picking an off-meta champion or role?
Riot's published wording says off-meta decisions are not automatically penalized. The relevant boundary is intent and behaviour: whether you genuinely participate and try to help the team, or deliberately reduce its chance of success.
What if I play badly or lose lane?
A poor performance is not automatically intentional feeding. Riot has acknowledged that reports can concern poor play that does not deserve punishment. Continue participating, avoid deliberately repeating harmful actions, and adapt where possible.
Does a teammate's report guarantee a punishment?
No. A player can submit a report, but Riot describes reports as signals that require context rather than automatic proof. This page cannot predict Riot's decision in a particular match.
Can I use this page as permission to play anything anywhere?
No. It explains Riot's published conduct boundary; it is not permission to sabotage a match. A genuine unusual strategy still requires participation, reasonable effort and an intention to win.
What should I do if teammates threaten or harass me?
Keep any reply brief, continue playing, and use League's mute and report controls where appropriate. Do not retaliate, announce that you will throw, or allow the argument to replace normal participation.
Is VRC.LOL part of Riot Games, and can this page overturn a penalty?
No. VRC.LOL is an independent community website and is not endorsed by or affiliated with Riot Games. Riot has the final say on enforcement. If you believe Riot made an error, submit an appeal through Riot Player Support.
Is Yuumi Jungle automatically griefing?
No. Yuumi Jungle is an experimental and difficult role choice, but the pick alone is not a conduct verdict. Yuumi may Attach to and switch between multiple allies; Best Friend improves her bond with one ally but does not lock her to that player. Taking Smite, performing jungle responsibilities, adapting and genuinely trying to win is materially different from remaining Attached to avoid participating or deliberately sabotaging the team. Riot retains the final decision in an individual case.
Does one Yuumi Top win prove the role is good?
No. A completed Swiftplay win proves that the pick can function in a real match. It does not provide a general win rate or erase the surrounding context: the reviewed team led 45-17, Yuumi had 20 CS, and the record does not validate the pick for Draft or Ranked. Treat Yuumi Top as a fragile player-selected experiment, keep performing the assigned lane and let Riot retain the final decision on conduct.
Is Blitzcrank Top bannable if I wait near my turret for a hook?
The champion, role and turret setup are not automatic misconduct. A genuine plan still means farming, collecting experience, controlling the wave, warding, adapting when the opponent stays away and contributing to objectives and team play. Prolonged deliberate inactivity, refusing normal lane responsibilities or trying to harm the team is not protected by calling it an off-meta tactic. Riot retains the final decision in an individual case.
Does Swiftplay make every unusual role acceptable?
No. Swiftplay changes setup and pacing and may support more experimentation, but it does not change the conduct boundary. Continue performing the selected role and trying to win; queue type does not protect intentional feeding, inactivity, harassment or deliberate sabotage.
Does a Match-v5 sample or positive win rate prove the pick is allowed?
No. Aggregate evidence can describe frequency and performance in a defined queue and patch sample. It cannot determine intent, approve an individual match, guarantee that no report or penalty will occur, or replace Riot's decision.
