Before champion select

Who gets put in your League match?

League tries to balance skill, role preference and queue time. Party size matters, but it is only one part of the search, and blocking somebody does not remove them from the player pool.

Confirmed purposeBalance the lobby

Skill estimate, roles and queue time are considered together.

Blocking changesDirect contact

It does not create a personal avoid-player matchmaking list.

Four-player FlexNot eligible

Choose an eligible unranked queue or add a fifth player.

Enemy partiesNot disclosed

Your own group size does not prove their party arrangement.

The selected queue changes the search

How matchmaking differs by game mode

Each matchmade queue uses its own context. A result from one mode does not prove that another mode sees you the same way.

Summoner's Rift · Ranked

Solo / Duo

Individual ranked climb

Enter alone or with one eligible partner. It has its own visible rank and matchmaking context; larger premades cannot enter this queue.

Summoner's Rift · Ranked

Flex

Team-focused ranked queue

Parties of one, two, three or five are eligible. Four-player groups are excluded and Solo / Duo rank remains separate.

Summoner's Rift · Unranked

Normal Draft

Bans, picks and assigned roles

Champion select resolves bans and picks before play. It is unranked and should not be treated as evidence of a player's Ranked MMR.

Summoner's Rift · Unranked

Swiftplay

Faster, more forgiving rules

Choose champion-role options before queuing. Its accelerated game rules and queue context differ from Normal Draft and Ranked.

Single-lane · Matchmade

ARAM

Random champion team fights

A separate five-versus-five mode with its own champion-selection system, maps and pacing. Summoner's Rift role assumptions do not transfer directly.

Rotating mode · When available

Arena

Teams and rounds, not lanes

Arena uses a different team format and progression loop. Availability and rules can change, so the current League client is authoritative.

Summoner's Rift · Matchmade

Co-op versus AI

Players against bots

Human teammates are matched together to face AI opponents. It is intended for learning and does not create a normal PvP or Ranked result.

Player-arranged lobby

Custom game

The host forms the lobby

Players and spectators join through the custom lobby rather than the ordinary public matchmaking search. Custom results should not be read as normal queue evidence.

From queue button to champion select

The search in four clear stages

This is a plain-language model of Riot's published goals, not a view into its private algorithm.

  1. 1You chooseQueue and roles

The selected mode defines eligibility and which role choices apply.

  2. 2League searchesEligible players

The search begins around the queue's relevant hidden skill estimates.

  3. 3Constraints meetBalance and wait

Roles, premades and a practical queue time must fit together.

  4. 4A lobby formsBest valid match found

The result is balanced from available pre-game information, not guaranteed identical.

The two questions most people mean

Direct answers first

Can a blocked player appear?

YesConfirmed by Riot

Players you block, mute or report can still be placed in your matches. Blocking limits unwanted direct contact; it does not remove that player from matchmaking.

Four premade versus four premade?

Not guaranteedNo exact mirror rule

Queuing as four does not prove the opposing team has a four-person party. Riot balances several constraints and does not publish a guarantee that party sizes always mirror exactly.

One search, several constraints

What the matchmaker is balancing

Riot describes matchmaking as a tradeoff. Improving one goal too aggressively can make another worse.

1

Fair teams

It looks for teams with similar average hidden Matchmaking Rating, or MMR, inside the selected queue.

2

Role preferences

On role-select queues it tries to use primary and secondary choices, then autofill when a role shortage would otherwise stall the queue.

3

Reasonable wait

The search cannot wait forever for ten perfectly identical ratings, roles and party arrangements, so its acceptable range can broaden.

4

Premade context

Playing together changes team coordination and can widen the skill spread. Riot has worked on premade balance, but does not promise an identical party on the other side.

Premades and queue eligibility

A group of four does not fit every queue

The League client is authoritative when seasonal or regional queue rules change.

Ranked Solo / Duo1 or 2 players

Rank and region eligibility can limit which duo partners can enter together.

Ranked Flex1, 2, 3 or 5 players

Four-player Flex parties are not allowed. Riot directs that group to an unranked queue so one solo player is not the permanent exception.

Normal Draft / SwiftplayUnranked group play

A group of four can enter an eligible unranked queue and receive a fifth teammate. That does not reveal the enemy party sizes.

Full premadeFive players together

Your whole party remains on one team. Matchmaking still seeks a valid opposing team under that queue's current rules.

What you can knowYour own party and queue eligibility

The client shows who joined your group and whether that group can enter the selected queue.

The number you see is not the whole search

Visible rank and MMR are different

Do not use one border, badge or previous rank as proof that the lobby is deliberately unfair.

Visible rank

The progression shown to players: Iron through Challenger, LP and the current climb.

Hidden MMR

The matchmaker's skill estimate for forming teams. Riot does not expose a public exact MMR value.

Queue context

Ranked and unranked experience can differ. A strong Ranked player may have a less-established Normal rating.

When one role has too few players

Why autofill still exists

Without autofill, uneven role demand could create extremely long waits. Riot's 2026 approach first tries to pair autofilled players in the same opposing role.

  1. 1
Try the same role on both teams

An autofilled Jungler should first be matched against another autofilled Jungler where possible.

  2. 2
    Then try equal autofill counts

If same-role parity is unavailable, the system aims for the same number of autofilled players on each team.

  3. 3
    Use MMR to preserve balance

Riot says the less favourable autofill arrangement can be offset with slightly higher-MMR players in the worst case.

What not to infer from one lobby

Common matchmaking myths

Claim“I blocked them, so they cannot return.”

Fact: the block limits communication, not matchmaking.

Claim“We are a four-stack, so they must be one too.”

Fact: your party does not reveal the opponent's party arrangement.

Claim“That visible rank proves the MMR is wrong.”

Fact: rank can lag behind MMR, and separate queues can have different skill estimates.

Claim“A winning streak triggers forced losses.”

Fact: Riot denies deliberately assigning worse teammates. Rising MMR leads to stronger matches.

Claim“One-sided final score means the lobby began unfair.”

Fact: snowballing, champion familiarity and decisions after loading can turn a close estimate into a one-sided result.

Claim“KDA should decide who belongs in the lobby.”

Fact: Riot avoids KDA-based matchmaking because useful team play is not captured by one scoreline.

Quick reference

Matchmaking questions

Can League match me with a player I blocked?

Yes. Riot says blocking, muting or reporting a player does not remove that person from matchmaking. Blocking limits contact; it is not an avoid-player queue.

If I queue as four, must the enemy team also contain a four-person premade?

No published Riot rule guarantees an exact four-versus-four premade mirror. The matchmaker balances several constraints, so your party size does not reveal the opposing party arrangement.

Can four players queue for Ranked Flex?

No. Riot currently allows Flex parties of one, two, three or five. A four-person group must choose an unranked queue.

Why can a player with a different visible rank appear in my game?

Matchmaking uses hidden MMR rather than visible rank alone. Queue ratings are not necessarily identical, and a visible rank can lag behind a player's current MMR.

Does Riot force losses after a winning streak?

Riot says there is no system that deliberately gives a winning player worse teammates or stronger opponents. As MMR rises, the player moves into stronger matches.
